Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 October 2026
Fernweh Charge takes your privacy seriously. This page describes the personal data we process when you use the app, or use Fernweh Charge inside an AI assistant, and the legal basis for doing so. In short: the app never sends your location to our servers, but its driving routes and place search are answered by Apple Maps, which receives your position and what you search for (sections 2 and 6); a charger's detail looks the charger's place up at Apple Maps, Wikimedia and the OpenStreetMap Overpass servers, which receive the charger's coordinate, not yours (sections 2 and 6); the price map on our website sends the map area you view (and, if you click тАЬNear meтАЭ, your position) to our servers; we operate no user accounts, and we use no analytics or tracking frameworks.
1. Who is responsible
The data controller within the meaning of the GDPR is David Moeller Apps, Korte Lijnbaanssteeg 1-4435, 1012 SL Amsterdam, Netherlands. Email: fernweh.app@icloud.com. Full provider details and the trade-register entry are available in the Imprint. /impressum
2. What data we process
We process as little data as possible. Specifically:
- Location data in the app тАФ used to centre the map on your surroundings and as the start of a driving route. The app never sends your location to our servers. Driving routes and place search are answered by Apple Maps: a route sends your position, the destination and any charging stops on the way, and a place search sends what you type and an area around your position (section 6). The price map on our website works differently: see section 4.
- Place details for a charger тАФ when you open a charger, the app looks the charger's place up to show photos, opening hours, contact details and a satellite view. Each lookup sends the charger's own data, never your position: Apple Maps receives the charger's coordinate and address (and, for Look Around, its coordinate); Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons receive the charger's coordinate and the name of the place found; the OpenStreetMap Overpass servers receive the charger's coordinate. Each of these servers also sees your IP address, as with any internet request (section 6). The app never sends your location to our servers.
- HTTP requests to our backend server (charge.fernweh.world) to load the national charging-station price snapshot. These requests carry your IP address (technically unavoidable), which is also used to enforce rate limits (abuse prevention) and appears in the request logs described in section 7.
- Device integrity тАФ production builds authenticate with Apple App Attest. The backend stores a pseudonymous per-device key identifier solely to block abuse; we cannot link it to your identity.
- No accounts, no cookies, no trackers, no analytics frameworks. There are no user profiles.
3. Using Fernweh Charge in an AI assistant
You can use Fernweh Charge's live prices inside AI assistants such as Claude (Anthropic) and ChatGPT (OpenAI). The assistant then talks to our backend (charge.fernweh.world/mcp) on your behalf. In that case:
- What we receive тАФ the coordinates of the searched place, its name when the assistant passes one, the filters chosen (such as radius, minimum power, connector type or availability), and the ID of a station you ask about. If you open a station link from an answer, your browser loads it from our website (www.fernweh.world); that request carries your IP address and the station's operator and coordinates.
- No identity тАФ we receive no account and no device identity, and this path uses no App Attest key. The IP address our backend sees is usually that of the assistant provider's server; if your assistant connects from your own device (as Claude Code does), it is your device's. We use it to enforce rate limits, and it appears in our request logs, which section 7 describes.
- Searched places are not stored тАФ we do not keep the places you search for or the arguments of a search.
- Daily counts only тАФ we count searches per day for each tool and each connecting service, without any personal data.
- Map tiles тАФ where the assistant shows the map, map styles and tiles load directly from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org) in your browser or app. OpenFreeMap sees your IP address and the area shown; we do not receive that traffic.
- The assistant's provider тАФ Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for ChatGPT тАФ handles your conversation under its own privacy policy. Anthropic: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy. OpenAI: https://openai.com/policies/privacy-policy/
- Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR тАФ legitimate interest in providing the app's core function (displaying charging prices) through the assistant you choose and in protecting the service from abuse.
4. The price map on our website
The price map on www.fernweh.world (тАЬPrice mapтАЭ in the Charge menu) lists the cheapest chargers in the area you are viewing. Your browser asks our website, and our website asks our backend (charge.fernweh.world/mcp) on your behalf. In that case:
- What we receive тАФ with each search, the map centre and the area shown (as a radius) and the filters chosen (such as minimum power, connector type or sort order). If you click тАЬNear meтАЭ, the map centre is the position your browser reports, to about 10 m; the same coordinates are also kept in the page address, and so in any link you copy or share.
- Your position, only with your consent тАФ тАЬNear meтАЭ makes your browser ask for permission, and the position is read only when you click the button, never when the page loads. If you refuse, nothing is sent and the map stays where it was. You can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser's site settings.
- Searches are not kept as a record by our website тАФ we do not keep a list of the places you search for (the host's request logs are described below). To spare the backend repeated identical calls, our website reuses an answer for up to 60 seconds, keyed on the rounded coordinates, radius and filters of the search; that key carries no IP address or other identity.
- Map tiles тАФ map styles and tiles load directly from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org) in your browser. OpenFreeMap sees your IP address and the area shown; we do not receive that traffic.
- IP address and request logs тАФ your IP address reaches our website's host (section 6) with every request. Our website passes each search on to our backend without your address, so the backend sees the website's address, not yours. The host's own request logs may record your IP address and the address of each search, which contains the coordinates searched; section 7 describes the retention of our backend's request logs only.
- Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR тАФ your consent for your position when you click тАЬNear meтАЭ; Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR тАФ legitimate interest in providing the price map's core function (displaying charging prices for the area you view) and in protecting the service from abuse.
5. Legal basis
Processing is based on:
- Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR тАФ legitimate interest in operating the app and providing its core function (displaying charging prices).
- Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR тАФ legitimate interest in protecting the service from abuse (Apple App Attest device check and request rate limiting).
- Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR тАФ your consent for the location access described in sections 2 and 4. In the app you may withdraw this consent at any time via iOS Settings; the app continues to work but will no longer auto-centre the map on your position. On the website you may withdraw it in your browser's site settings; тАЬNear meтАЭ then no longer works.
6. Processors / Third parties
We use the following service providers to operate Fernweh Charge:
- Apple Inc. тАФ App Store distribution, App Attest (device-integrity attestation) and Apple Maps, which answers the app's driving routes and place search. A driving route (to a charger or a place you searched for) sends your position, the destination and any charging stops on the way to Apple Maps; a place search sends what you type, and an area around your position, to Apple Maps. A charger's place lookup sends the charger's coordinate and address to Apple Maps; Look Around sends the charger's coordinate. Apple privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
- Hetzner Online GmbH тАФ hosting of our backend on a virtual server (including the self-hosted Postgres database for the charging-station dataset) and of our website www.fernweh.world, which serves the station links in AI-assistant answers (section 3) and the price map (section 4); opening one sends your IP address to that server. Data residency: Germany (EU). https://www.hetzner.com/legal/privacy-policy
- OpenFreeMap тАФ map styles and tiles for the map shown in AI assistants (section 3) and on the price map (section 4), loaded directly from tiles.openfreemap.org by your browser or app. OpenFreeMap privacy policy: https://openfreemap.org/privacy/
- Wikimedia Foundation тАФ Wikidata (query.wikidata.org) and Wikimedia Commons (commons.wikimedia.org), which supply the photos, descriptions and opening details of a charger's place. A place lookup sends the charger's coordinate and the name of the place found; photos load from Wikimedia Commons, which sees your IP address. Wikimedia privacy policy: https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Policy:Privacy_policy
- FOSSGIS e.V. тАФ operates the public OpenStreetMap Overpass instance overpass-api.de, which supplies a charger's place details from OpenStreetMap. A place lookup sends the charger's coordinate (an Overpass query).
- VK (maps.mail.ru) тАФ operates the fallback Overpass instance maps.mail.ru, asked only when the first does not answer in time; a place lookup then sends the charger's coordinate (an Overpass query).
- Federal Highway Research Institute (BAst) тАФ source of charging-station price data via Mobilithek (public open-data portal, CC0 1.0 Universal). No personal data processed.
7. Retention
We do not store any user-related data on our servers; the only thing our website's application keeps about a price-map search is the 60-second answer reuse described in section 4; its host's request logs are described there too. Backend request logs (which include the IP address) are written to the server's container log and retained for at most 30 days for operational and security purposes; they contain no personal content beyond the IP address.
8. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection. Because we keep no accounts and persist no user-related data, these rights are largely satisfied by the app's architecture in practice.
Supervisory authority: the controller is established in the Netherlands and is supervised by the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, https://autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl). As a user in Germany you may also contact your competent state data-protection authority.
