
Plan the stops first โ where you'll sleep, and the two or three places you refuse to skip. Let the route fall out of those. Then fit the charging into the route. Charging is a constraint on the trip, not the thing you build the trip around.
That's the short answer. The longer one is that there are three orderings, each produces a genuinely different trip, and each is right for somebody. The order you plan in isn't a detail of the plan. It mostly is the plan.
Why does the order you plan in matter?
Because a road trip has three layers that constrain each other โ the route, the stops, the charging โ and whichever one you fix first is the one the other two bend around.
Fix the route first and the stops become "things near the road". Fix the chargers first and the days become the gaps between plugs. Fix the stops first and both the route and the charging become consequences of where you wanted to be. Same map, same car, same week off: three different trips.
Most people never actually choose. They open a navigation app, which quietly chooses route-first for them, or they open a charger map, which chooses charging-first. It's worth choosing on purpose, so here are the three, worked honestly.
Route first: the fastest trip, and the emptiest
You put in A and B, take the line the map draws, and hang stops wherever the road happens to pass. It's how a sat-nav thinks, and it's how most of us planned our first long drive.
Its strength is real: it's the fastest total time, nothing is wasted, and there's almost nothing to decide. It's the right order when the drive is the point โ a pass you want to cross, a coast road you want to drive end to end โ or when the trip is really a transfer: get to the holiday, then have the holiday.
Its weakness is that the nights land wherever the day happens to end, which is usually a services town off a junction, and the stops are afterthoughts โ chosen because they were near, not because you wanted them. You see the country from the fast lane. And for an electric car it's the ordering most likely to leave you deciding about charging at 18% on the hard shoulder of your own plan, because the line was drawn as if the battery were full the whole way.
Charging first: the safest-feeling trip, and the one that isn't quite yours
You pick the fast-charging sites, chain them at comfortable intervals, and find things to see near each one. Nothing about range is left to chance.
And sometimes that's exactly right. A genuinely charger-sparse region โ one plug in the next eighty kilometres โ or a very long single-day push where you'll charge three times and see nothing in between anyway: in those cases the chargers really are the dominant constraint, and pretending otherwise is how people end up stuck. If that's your trip, plan it this way and don't apologise.
But on most of the main corridors it's solving a problem that has largely gone away, and it costs more than it looks. You've designed a week off around infrastructure. The lake you wanted is forty minutes from the nearest fast charger, so it quietly drops out. The trip turns into a demonstration that the car can do it โ which was never really in doubt.
Stops first: the trip you actually wanted
This is the order we recommend, and the reason Fernweh is built the way it is.
Start with the nights: where you sleep, and for how many nights. Then the two or three stops you will not skip โ the ones you'd be sad to lose. Those are the trip. Everything else is negotiable.
The route is then a consequence. It's simply the line between the places you chose, and you look at it leg by leg: how far, how long. And the charging fits into the legs. Wherever a leg is longer than your comfortable range, a fast charge goes somewhere along it where you'd want a break anyway; the overnight charge goes wherever you're sleeping. The two kinds of charging do different jobs, and neither of them decided where you went.
Why this works is worth stating plainly. Charging is a local constraint: it applies to one leg. The nights and the stops you refuse to skip are global: they define the whole trip. Fit the local thing into the global thing, not the reverse. And when the fit fails โ a leg that can't be made, a charger that's badly out of the way โ you find out about one leg, and you change one leg. Moving a night is a much bigger edit than moving a charge.
Didn't you say to plan the charging first?
We did. Two earlier posts here say, in almost those words, "plan the charging stops first, the photo stops second" โ and that's still right. It's just about a different scale.
At the scale of the whole trip, the nights and the must-see stops come first. At the scale of a single day โ once you know where you're waking up and where you're sleeping โ the fast-charge stop goes in before the viewpoint and the bakery, because it's the one stop in the day that's tied to where a plug actually exists. The photo stops flex. The charger doesn't.
So the full order is: the nights, then the stops you refuse to skip, then the route, then the chargers, then everything else in the day. The charger is the first of the flexible things. It isn't the first thing.
How do you actually do it, in that order?
- Nights. Where you sleep and for how many nights โ ideally somewhere you can plug in overnight, because that quietly removes the first charging stop of the next morning.
- Non-negotiables. Two or three stops per trip, not per day. If everything is a must-see, nothing is.
- Let the route fall out. Look at each leg's distance and driving time before you admire the line on the map. A leg is what you'll actually live through.
- Fit the charging. Any leg longer than your comfortable range gets a fast stop, placed where you'd want the break. Plan the length of the stop, not the length of the charge โ they are not the same number.
- Pin only what's real. The ferry, the check-in window, the booked tour. Leave every other time derived, so the plan can re-time itself when a stop moves instead of arguing with you. (Who owns the numbers is the longer version of that rule.)
Where Fernweh fits
