Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Fernweh and how it can help you plan your perfect road trip adventure.

How do I plan a road trip with multiple stops using Fernweh?

Fernweh makes multi-stop road trip planning incredibly simple. Just add locations to your trip by searching or tapping on the map, set your stay duration at each stop, and Fernweh automatically calculates travel times and dates. You can add unlimited stops, rearrange them with drag and drop, and view your entire journey on an interactive map.

What makes Fernweh different from Google Maps for trip planning?

While Google Maps is excellent for navigating from point A to B, Fernweh is specifically designed for multi-day itineraries with multiple stops. Fernweh offers features Google Maps doesn't have for trip planning: automatic date calculations based on stay duration, trip organization across multiple days or weeks, offline access to your itinerary, CarPlay integration, and the ability to export your trip in various formats. Fernweh is purpose-built for travelers planning complex journeys.

How can I collaborate on trip planning with friends?

Fernweh makes planning trips with friends and family easy. You can invite others to collaborate on your trip planning, allowing everyone to contribute ideas and suggestions. Each person can add or edit stops, and all changes sync in real-time across devices. You can also export and share your itinerary in various formats (PDF, GPX, KML, CSV, JSON, Markdown) for those who don't have the app.

Does Fernweh work offline?

Yes!* Once your trip is created, Fernweh stores all your trip data locally on your device, making it accessible offline. This is perfect for international travel or areas with poor connectivity. While searching for new locations requires an internet connection, all your saved trips and their details are available anytime, anywhere. *Note: Navigation and map data require an internet connection as they rely on Apple Maps services.

Can I export my trip to other apps or formats?

Absolutely! Fernweh offers extensive export options including PDF (for printing or sharing), GPX and KML (for GPS devices and other mapping apps), CSV and JSON (for data manipulation), and Markdown (for easy reading). This flexibility ensures your trip data works seamlessly with other tools in your travel planning workflow.

How does Fernweh work with Apple CarPlay?

Fernweh integrates with Apple CarPlay to make navigation during your road trip seamless. You can view your trip itinerary on your car's display, select any destination from your trip, and open it directly in Apple Maps for turn-by-turn navigation. This integration ensures safe and convenient access to your trip details while driving.

Which Apple devices support Fernweh?

Fernweh is available for iPhone and iPad running iOS/iPadOS 26 or later. The app is optimized for both device types with layouts that take advantage of each screen size. With iCloud sync, your trips automatically stay up-to-date across all your devices.

How does Fernweh handle my data and privacy?

Fernweh is built with privacy as a core principle. We don't sell or rent your data, use third-party analytics, or include ad frameworks. Your trip data is stored locally on your device and, if you choose, synced through your personal iCloud account. This means your travel plans remain private and under your control at all times.

What's new with iOS 26 and liquid glass design?

Fernweh is among the first apps to embrace Apple's revolutionary liquid glass design language with iOS 26. This brings fluid, translucent interfaces that adapt beautifully to your content and usage patterns, creating a more immersive and intuitive experience for planning your road trips.

How does the AI Trip Assistant work?

Our AI Trip Assistant (currently in beta) helps you create comprehensive trip itineraries from scratch. Simply describe your ideal journey - like 'a 10-day road trip through the Swiss Alps with scenic mountain routes and cozy villages' - and the assistant will suggest routes, destinations, and timing to create the perfect itinerary for your adventure.

What is the Intelligent Sharing Extension?

The enhanced sharing extension allows you to share text and websites with Fernweh to automatically discover points of interest. When you have Apple Intelligence enabled, it becomes even more powerful, providing smarter location suggestions and trip insights based on the content you share.

Can I copy stops between trips?

Yes. Long-press or swipe a stop in any trip and you'll see a Copy option. Then in another trip, tap a direction or stop row to paste — Fernweh inserts the copied stop at that position. The clipboard works across trips, so you can build a new trip from pieces of older ones. The clipboard is in-memory; closing the app clears it.

Does Fernweh sync my trips to Apple Calendar?

Yes. With Apple Calendar sync enabled, Fernweh creates one Apple Calendar event per drive leg of your trip — a 5-stop trip becomes 4 calendar events titled "Drive: Origin → Destination". Events update automatically whenever you change the trip (move a stop, change duration, add or remove stops). Calendar sync is available for Road Trip Pro subscribers and legacy users.

Can I use Siri or Shortcuts with Fernweh?

Yes. Fernweh exposes App Intents that let Siri, Spotlight search, and Apple Shortcuts work with your trips. You can ask "Open my Norway trip", "Export trip", or "What trips do I have planned?" and Siri responds. Spotlight indexes your trips, stops, and points of interest so they show up in system search. On devices that support Apple Intelligence, Fernweh participates in conversational queries — ask things like "When does my next trip start?" and get answers without opening the app.

How does Fernweh handle EV charging?

Fernweh has built-in EV charger search that runs along your planned route, so chargers near your stops surface automatically. You can filter by Charging Point Operator (selected-CPO preference) and minimum kW, then add a charger as a trip stop with one tap. The free tier includes 5 EV charger searches per month; Road Trip Pro unlocks unlimited searches. Pricing context for German chargers is available in the standalone Fernweh Charge app, which uses the official AFIR DATEX II Mobilithek feed.

Is Fernweh free to use? What are the limits?

Fernweh offers a generous free tier that includes up to 2 trips with 20 stops each, plus 5 EV charger searches per month. All core features like iCloud sync, trip sharing, export options, and CarPlay integration are included free. For unlimited trips, stops, and full EV charging planning capabilities, you can upgrade to Road Trip Pro subscription.

I'm a legacy user - can I get a discount on Road Trip Pro?

Absolutely! We deeply value our early supporters. As a legacy user, you already have unlimited trips and stops, plus access to all upcoming non-API features at no additional cost—that's our commitment to you. If you'd like access to premium API-powered features like EV charging stations, you can request an exclusive discount on Road Trip Pro directly in the app. Simply look for the legacy user banner in the app settings and tap to request your personalized discount. This is our way of saying thank you for believing in Fernweh from the beginning.
