If you're planning a multi-day EV road trip, you want two kinds of tool, and they don't compete. An EV route planner answers "can I make the next charger, and how long do I sit there?" A trip planner answers "where am I sleeping on night four, and what's worth stopping for?"

Put another way: ABRP plans the drive. PlugShare checks the charger. Fernweh plans the week.

That's the short version. The rest of this post explains why the split falls where it does, which tool to open at each step, and where Fernweh โ€” our app โ€” is the wrong tool for the job. Facts about ABRP and PlugShare were checked on 2026-09-14 against their own websites and App Store listings, which are linked throughout.

What is an EV route planner actually good at?

Energy. Pick your car model and your destination, and ABRP hands back a full trip plan with the charging stops and the trip duration already worked out. That's the core promise on its App Store listing, and the part it does better than anything else we know of.

The reason is the car model. ABRP lists more than 1,000 data-driven EV models, so the plan reflects the consumption of the car you're actually driving, not a generic average. You can add waypoints, tune the consumption profile and set your charging preferences, in the app or in a browser. The free planner covers routing, consumption profiles and basic charger search. Premium ($4.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store) adds the live layer: real-time charger availability in plans, live traffic, weather, automatic route adaptation mid-drive, live data from the car, and navigation on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's even a native app for cars running Android Automotive.

If the question is "will this car, on this day, reach that charger with a comfortable margin?", an energy-model router is the right tool, and Fernweh isn't.

And what does a charger app like PlugShare add?

A second opinion from people who were just there. A router can tell you a charger exists and how fast it's rated; it can't tell you that two of the four stalls were out of order on Tuesday. PlugShare can, because its map is built from drivers: reviews, photos, check-ins, and a PlugScore rating meant to show at a glance how reliable a charger is.

It covers the major networks across North America and Europe, lets you filter by plug type, charging speed and amenities, and lets you check whether a station is working and available before you commit. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, and it's free, with an optional paid tier that removes ads. It also has a built-in trip planner that finds chargers along a route. But the reason most drivers keep it on the phone is the check the morning of the drive: is the charger I'm counting on actually working today?

What can't an EV router tell you?

Everything that isn't about energy. A router's question is: given this car and these points, where do you charge and how long does it take? It's very good at that question. It's not trying to choose the points.

It doesn't know that you want two nights by the lake, not one. That the town with the fast charger is also the town with the good bakery, which makes it lunch rather than a detour. That day three should be short because of the hike, or that everything moves if the ferry only runs twice a day. Those are trip decisions, and they come first. The charging plan only makes sense once they're settled.

That's the gap a trip planner fills. You don't need it for a single long drive. You need it once the trip has nights in it.

What does a trip planner do that the router doesn't?

It holds the week. In Fernweh the trip is the object: stops in order, the nights you spend at each one, and every leg between them with its distance, drive time and arrival. Move a stop on day three and the legs on either side of it recompute. The days after it re-time themselves; you don't redo them by hand.

Charging lives inside that plan rather than on top of it. From any leg's directions you can search for chargers along the way. Each one shows its connector count and maximum power, and you can add the one you want to the trip as a stop, so the day's timing includes the charge. With Road Trip Pro, each drive leg also becomes its own event in Apple Calendar and stays up to date as the plan changes. Your week shows up where the rest of your life already is.

What Fernweh doesn't do is the battery maths. It won't tell you whether your car makes the next charger. That's the router's job, which is why we use both.

Which tool do you use for which job, and in what order?

This is the order we'd recommend. It's the same one from our post on what to plan first, with a tool attached to each step.

  1. Set the nights and the stops you won't skip, in Fernweh. Where you're sleeping, for how long, and the two or three places the trip is actually for.
  2. Let the route fall out of them. The legs, their distances and their drive times come from the stops. Look at the days: is one of them a six-hour push? Split it now, while it's cheap.
  3. Run each long day through ABRP with your car and a realistic starting charge. This is the energy check: does the day work, and where does the router want you to charge?
  4. Put the chargers you chose into the Fernweh trip as stops. Now the day's arrival times include the charging, and the calendar events reflect a day you can actually drive.
  5. The morning of the drive, check PlugShare for recent check-ins on the charger you're counting on. If you have ABRP Premium, let it run live on the road and adapt the route to traffic as the drive goes.

Two apps, sometimes three. Each does the part it's good at, and none of them has to pretend to do the rest.

Where does Fernweh fall short next to a router?

In three places, and we'd rather say so than have you find out at 14% on a motorway.

  • No energy model. Fernweh doesn't model your car's battery, so it can't tell you whether a leg is too long for your range. ABRP plans the charging around your car's consumption, for more than 1,000 EV models.
  • iPhone and iPad only. No Android, no web. ABRP runs in a browser and on Android, and PlugShare runs on iOS, Android and the web. If your travel group is on mixed devices, Fernweh won't cover everyone.
  • No driver reports on chargers. Fernweh shows you which chargers are along a leg and what they're rated for. Whether one was broken yesterday is PlugShare's territory.

The free tier has limits too: 2 trips, 20 stops each, and 5 charger searches a month. Road Trip Pro removes all three.

Common questions

Do I need ABRP if I use Fernweh?

For short trips on well-served motorways, usually not. Once a day's drive gets long relative to your range, or the chargers thin out, yes: Fernweh doesn't model your battery, and ABRP does.

Can ABRP plan a multi-day trip on its own?

It handles waypoints and will plan charging across a long route. What it's built around is the drive, not the days. The nights, the stops worth the detour, and a calendar that stays current are the trip planner's job.

Is PlugShare a route planner?

It has a trip planner that finds chargers along a route, but its real strength is the community layer. Reviews, photos, check-ins and a reliability score tell you whether a specific charger is worth counting on.

What's the simplest setup for a first multi-day EV trip?

Fernweh for the plan, ABRP for the energy check on your longest days, PlugShare the morning of each drive. If you only add one app to Fernweh, make it the router.
